Five minutes with Oyuka: our newest Group Insurance Team Leader
• 2 min read
We recently stopped for a quick ‘lunch and learn’ with our newest team leader, Oyuka.
Thanks for stopping by, Oyuka. We might start from the beginning… what attracted you to join AGI?
I saw the job ad saying graduates welcome and I was a fresh grad looking for a start, so I thought, ‘Why not?’. Even though I had no background in insurance, the company seemed welcoming, and I felt I had nothing to lose, so I applied. When I spoke to Terry over the phone, he sounded so welcoming, friendly, and relaxed so I felt it was a nice, safe place to start my career, particularly during COVID.
You’ve recently been promoted to Team Leader of Integrity. Congratulations! How’s it going?
Thank you! It’s been an adjustment and a learning curve. I’m trying to adjust to the pace of the position, learning all the time: time management, balancing competing priorities. Early days on the job but I’m so thankful for the team members around me who have been really reassuring. Terry and Olivia are veterans always around to help with questions, and Vera, even though she’s new, has been super supportive.
What does your average day look like?
No two days are the same and I’m learning every day! Addressing emails, meetings, reviews, transition reporting to the insurer, data reconciliation – lots of problem solving and troubleshooting as challenges arise. I like that every day there is a different challenge which motivates me to find a way to overcome them. It makes life interesting!
Anything else that people may not know about you?
I really like to cook, especially I recently moved in with a friend so I’ve been trying different recipes, checking out YouTube videos to improve our culinary skills. My specialty is Mongolian dumplings (beef). But with Chinese dumplings, I like pork and chives.
